Civil Twilight Provides Soundtrack for Yuna Yang's NYC Fashion ...

The existence of a symbiotic relationship within music and fashion is rarely questioned. Musicians like Madonna, David Bowie, and especially current, Lady Gaga, have brought revolutionary style to the fashion world through the platform they occupied at the heights of their careers. For womenswear designer, Yuna Yang, music was central to her creative processes while conceptualizing her Spring/Summer 2013 collection. Yuna Yang not only gave credit to the band she says inspired her, but invited Civil Twilight to watch as her runway show proceeded to the tune- literally- of their latest album, Holy Weather.

Several songs from the album were mixed into a playlist especially for Yuna Yang's presentation. Titled, "Close Your Eyes and See the World," the collection was fraught with feminine, lace-accented day dresses and flounce skirts Jackie Kennedy would be seen in, as well as elegantly draped evening gowns in pure white and striking red. Always feminine, Yang's collection never strayed too far from ladylike, and the women who graced the catwalk could have easily stepped out of one of the worlds unique to the songs created by Civil Twilight.

Not only did the band attend the collection's presentation, but played an intimate live set at the Art Gate Gallery after party to celebrate Yuna Yang's new collection. The quite passionate vocal style of singer, Steven McKellar, was reminiscent of Jeff Buckley, while guitarist Andrew McKellar burned loud to soft with gentle, haunting melodies, sometimes accented by the use of a violin bow. Keyboard player and background vocalist, Kevin Dailey, frequently switches instruments with Steven for different acts, and can readily pick up the bass while the singer strums away on guitar. Drummer Richard Wouters completes the four piece with steady but not overpowering drums that complement the band's sound. With rhythm and power, the band played tracks from Holy Weather including the politically tinged "Fire Escape," addicting, heady "Doorway," charged and dark "River," and their first hit, "Letters from the Sky."
