From Ernest Best Anane, Konongo-Ashanti

Residents of Asante Akyem Central Municipality in the Ashanti Region have appealed to His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama to appoint Mr. Jude Atuahene as the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for the area.

They contend that the municipality had suffered deprivation over the years, and that Mr. Atuahene's appointment would help restore confidence in the government.

Mr. Atuahene contested the parliamentary seat for constituency on the ticket of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the December 2012 general elections.

At a press conference at Konongo, the youth expressed displeasure about how development had eluded the whole municipality in the past two years, because there was no MCE for the area, following division and disunity among the party members and citizens.

Mr. Kwabena Antwi, spokesman of the group, stated emphatically that it was now clear that all the residents of the area, including the chiefs and youth, were fed up with the situation, because development was being retarded.

He further indicated since Mr. Atuahene was accepted by consensus to represent the party at the last polls, it was indicative that his appointment was MCE would be endorsed by all.

The spokesman said failure to consider their choice, the NDC, as a party, should forget about the over 11,000 votes it polled, which they attributed to the efforts of the aspiring MCE.

In another development members of the South District Assembly, on Tuesday, failed to elect a Presiding Member (PM), after four rounds of voting.

None of the two main contenders, the incumbent, Ahmed Abrahim, and Daniel Asenso Agyemang, obtained the two-thirds mandate of the 50-member house after the three rounds of voting on the first day of voting, compelling the District Electoral Officer to postpone the elections.

The exercise continued last Tuesday, yet none of the contestants emerged winner, as a winner is expected to poll 33 votes out of the 50 total votes cast.

Meanwhile, the leadership of the Assembly has come to a consensus to collaborate with the two contestants to resolve any problem preventing the emergence of a winner before the next round of election.

Mr. Edward Kussi Ayarkwah, District Chief Executive (DCE) for the area, who was not comfortable with the development, appealed to the members to smoke the peace-pipe and consider the development of the district as a priority, before individual's selfish interests or political motives.

He cautioned that an Assembly without a presiding Member (PM) cannot perform, in terms of infrastructural development, and urged the members to put their political sentiments aside, and come together as a united force to enable them improve the lot of their people.

He entreated the members to always team-up with him and the technocrats to run the affairs of the Assembly.

Mr. Ahmed Ibrahim, the incumbent and NDC Constituency Chairman, who spoke to The Chronicle, noted that the Assembly concept was non-partisan and should not be seen as so, because it would not champion development at the local level.

He appealed to the members to resolve their differences for the development of the district.
