Ikal Mayang is a WOMEN:girls initiative to raise women's voices in the world. In 2013, Ikal Mayang told women stories by 15 top Malaysian personalities, award-winning actresses, beauty queens, models, silver screen starlets and veterans, women who are not usual suspects as film makers to direct and tell their stories. 15 stories were directed by 15 non-traditional female directors who either wrote their own stories or worked with a writer.

Ikal Mayang is a Malay phrase which refers specifically to long, luscious, wavy and dark hair – feminine, sensuous and very womanly. In Malaysia, we realise that though our hair may be of the same colour, our hearts are very different. We are different people with our own stories to tell.

In 2013, Garang Pictures and Big Eyes Entertainment produced Ikal Mayang under the umbrella of WOMEN:girls – an initiative to raise the share of women voices through 15 short films by 15 non-traditional female directors such as Susan Lankester, Nanu Baharudin, Carmen Soo, Dira Abu Zahar, Elaine Daly, Sofia Jane, Vanidah Imran, Fauziah Nawi, Shamaine Othman, Aida Fitri, Sharifah Amani, Junad M. Nor, Mislina Mustaffa, Melissa Saila and Ida Nerina.

Post premiere of Ikal Mayang on International Women's Day 8th March 2013, the films were brought to community centres, colleges and universities, screened to people from various walks of life – from students to NGO volunteers. The screenings of these films have generated discussions on respective issues and also opened up stories otherwise not shared by the various community.
