KUALA LUMPUR: There are only three days left before the curtains come down on 2011 and as usual, the nation will usher in the New Year with what is known as the 'countdown'.

In the federal capital, the countdown to be held at several selected locations will have added excitement with the staging of concerts featuring the country's popular artistes, fantastic fireworks displays, and other exciting events.

A statement from i-Berhad, the developer of i-City in Shah Alam, said the  New Year's Eve celebration would be held on a grand scale at i-City, known as the city of digital lights, in Section 7, Shah Alam, from 8pm this Saturday.

According to the statement, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak is scheduled to attend the celebration in conjunction with the 'Sayangi Selangor' (Love Selangor) Carnival being held for four days from today.

Among the crowd-pullers will be the countdown with the prime minister, fireworks display, hot air balloon show, performances by artistes such as Najwa Mahiaddin, Suki and Adam of popular numbers including the 1Malaysia song.

At Dataran Shah Alam, the 'Countdown 2012' will be held on Friday night with a mass Maghrib prayer, chat with young imam Ashraf and a religious question-and-answer session with Ustaz Azhar Idrus and Zizan Raja Lawak.

The Dataran Merdeka in the federal capital will draw crowds like a magnet on New Year's eve when the Ambank Group in collaboration with Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) holds the "Malam Ambang Tahun Baru 2012" concert beginning at 9pm.

Besides featuring popular local artistes like Datuk M. Nasir, Jamal Abdillah, Faizal Tahir, Awie, Mizz Nina, Kumpulan Hujan and One Nation Emcees, there will also be an elaborate fireworks display at the stroke of midnight.

DBKL in a statement yesterday said that Jalan Raja would be closed to all vehicles on Friday from 7pm to 1am the next day for the rehearsal.

On Saturday, Jalan Raja will be closed to traffic from 5pm to 1am the next day.

DBKL advises the public going to Dataran Merdeka to use public transport to avoid traffic congestion and the problem of finding parking space.

Other areas in Kuala Lunmpur that will be thronged by New Year's Eve celebration revellers will be Bukit Bintang and the Kuala Lumpur City Centre where the iconic Petronas Twins Towers are located.

2012 will also be welcomed with much merriment in other states with a host of events.

According to the Melaka government official portal, the New Year's Eve celebration in the historical city on Dec 31 will be held at the Menara Taming Sari grounds.

Among the activities will be cultural performances, singing by invited artistes, a convoy of 1,000 women bikers, singing of patriotic songs and a fireworks display.

In Perak, among the New Year's Eve celebrations will be one organised by Tango Team at the Lost World of Tambun in Ipoh beginning at 7.30pm. — Bernama
