The South Korean navy made several warning shots in the direction of some North Korean fishing boats along the sea border of the two countries.

A spokesman for the Defense Ministry in Seoul said that the fishing boats tried to enter the disputed maritime border in the Yellow Sea. Before the shots were made, the boats were already warned by the crews of the patrol boats by radio.

Seoul had recently sent several warships in the sea area near the island of Yeonpyeong after a number of North Korean vessels entered the territory. North Korea does not recognize this border which was only unilaterally drawn by a UN command at the end of the Korean War in 1953.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un answered to the incident with a threat of war. "When the enemy fires only one bullet at our inviolable territory, the whole army will parade into a comprehensive counter-attack," he said.
