Kim Yuna - PC2018

Posted: 11 Jan 2014 01:00 AM PST

Yuna Kim is a name that will be prominent in the Sochi Olympic Games. Kim, a twenty-three year old South Korean native, is the 2010 Olympic figure skating champion, and she is setting her sights for Gold again in Sochi.
Kim's popularity is so great in fact that it took only fifteen minutes for the South Korean Figure Skating Championships tickets to sell out in December. The 3,100 tickets went on sale at 1pm on Friday December 27th, 2013, and were sold out by 1:15pm. The actual competition takes place January 3-5 in Goyang, near Seoul.
Kim took some time off from figure skating before winning the World Figure Skating Championships in March of 2013. She then took nine months off from competing, and did not skate again until December in Zagreb, Croatia, where she won her season debut, edging out Japan's Mao Asada. Asada is sure to be a competitor for Kim at the Sochi Games.
Kim has said that she plans to retire after this season ends, which may further explain the draw behind the fifteen minute South Korean Nationals sellout, as it this means that it will be her last event in her native country.
During the 2013 season so far Kim has been plagued by a metatarsal injury to her right foot, which has required her to miss upwards of six weeks of trainings and competition. This injury was sustained from excessive training, and is essentially bruising of the bone. Due to this injury she missed the ISU Grand Prix series, which is a series of international skating competitions. This year those competitions were held in Detroit, Michigan, St. John, New Brunswick, Canada, Beijing, China, Tokyo, Japan, Paris, France, Moscow, Russia, and Fukuoka, Japan. Missing this series is especially significant to Kim as she was the first South Korean figure skater to ever win a medal at an ISU Junior or Senior Grand Prix event, Championship, and the Olympic Games.
Kim will look to add another medal to her Gold from Vancouver at the Sochi Olympic Games in February, 2014.
