Kim Yuna Takes Early Lead in Her First Tournament of the Season ... Posted: 06 Dec 2013 01:32 PM PST In her first tournament of the season, South Korean figure skater Kim Yuna took a commanding lead after completing her short program on Friday at the 2013 Golden Spin of Zagreb in Croatia. Kim performed her new program to the tune of "Send in the Clowns" by Stephen Sondheim, scoring 73.37 to finish ahead of Japanese star Miki Ando, who came in at second with 62.81. Russia's Adelina Sotnikova finished with 68.38 at third. Winning the Golden Spin will further establish Kim's position as the heavy favorite to win the ladies' single in figure skating at the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia, next February. After landing a triple-triple combination to start her performance, Kim bobbled her landing on a double Axel and put her hand on the ice. But her performance was enough to secure a large lead of over 10 points. "I lost my balance a little bit at the end," Kim told Yonhap News. "I was a little nervous because it was the first tournament of the season for me." The free skate to determine the winner will take place on Saturday. Kim will showcase her free skate to Astor Piazzolla's "Adios Nonino." Kim started the 2013-14 season late, after withdrawing from two previous tournaments due to a damage to her metatarsal in her right foot. |
