Friday Fact - Pierre Latreille and the Rare Beetle That Saved His Life

Posted: 05 Oct 2012 12:35 PM PDT

Did you know...

Pierre André Latreille, a French entomologist and Catholic priest, was imprisoned during the French Revolution. All priests were required to swear an oath to the Civil Constitution of the Clergy, but Latreille refused to do so, and was subsequently thrown into the dungeons of Bordeaux. Latreille was left to languish in his prison cell for several years, before a prison doctor came to assess his state. The doctor found Latreille observing a beetle crawling across the prison floor, and asked him what he found so interesting about the insect. Latreille insisted the beetle was a rare species. The doctor collected the beetle and consulted a local naturalist, who confirmed Latreille's assertion that the beetle was, indeed, a rare one. Soon after, the naturalist obtained Latreille's release from prison, and did so just in time. His prison mates were all executed within a month of Latreille's release. Latreille named the beetle Necrobia ruficollis.

PWE Dinner with Pierre Andre Wines @Midi 57 - MSN Malaysia ...

The atmosphere was thoroughly relaxed at this particular installation of Prestige Wine Extravaganza dinner series at the spanking new and cosy eatery Midi 57 at The Bangkung Row in Bangsar. An outpost of Le Midi, this Italian restaurant has a more casual setting replete with an outdoor wood-fired pizza oven.

Corton Andre's area export manager Philippe Sinzelle, welcomed the guests and merrily chatted about Pierre André wines and of course his beautiful office in Burgundy, specifically the Château de Corton on the beautiful Corton Hill. As the sun dipped over the Bangsar neighbourhood, guests took their seats and awaited the cue to dinner.
