TC-Helicon | Yuna – Talent and Touch Posted: 11 Oct 2012 10:00 AM PDT You could note a lot of things about Yuna. You might remark on how she has bridged massive success in her native country of Malaysia with impressive critical acclaim from every major music media outlet since arriving in the US in 2009. Couple that with extensive touring and appearances on most major networks, you got the makings of a true international star. You could also focus on the fact that while Yuna was born in the East, she was raised on the voices of strong Western women like Patti Smith, Alanis Morissette, Feist, Gwen Stefani, Tori Amos, and Fiona Apple, and like most modern artists she didn't wait for fortune to come knocking, but started self-releasing her music to the internet before being discovered. If you want you can look upon her as a symbol of hope and inspiration, a young female Muslim singer-songwriter naturally transcending any cultural tensions people might expect or perceive. The point is, however you look at Yuna there's something worth taking notice of, something unique, and holding it all together is music. A sprawling talent with a natural feel for melody, Yuna effortlessly straps classic singer-songwriter sensibilities with modern production and cracking soundscapes, claiming her very own territory in the geography of contemporary music. Her voice is sweet, breathy, with a tinge of raspy sadness when called for, it wraps you up and carries you to the heart of the song, making her albums an immediate gracious and touching experience. We sat down with Yuna for an intimate interview about singing, performing and, more recently, adopting VoiceLive Touch to challenge the songwriting process and explore new ways of expressing yourself creatively. Watch the full interview below. Yuna's personal take on using VoiceLive Touch starts 3 minutes in. "I'm like a sponge, I soak everything up and use all of that to write something new." "I guess I see it as an extension to finding a variety in performing, because your voice is your tool as a singer – and this is one of the ways to be creative with your vocals (…) and have fun with your talent."
