Stories from Isaac Akwetey Okunor

Members of the East Akim Municipal Assembly have expressed grave concern over the quality of work executed by contractors working on the various projects of the Assembly.

According to the members, contractors working on the Assembly's projects have compromised with quality, leading to what they described as shoddy work.

The furious members made the disclosure during the First Ordinary Meeting of the Third Session of the Sixth Assembly held on Wednesday.

They have, therefore, called on President John Dramani Mahama, through the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of the area, Simon Peter Asirifi, to immediately constitute a committee to investigate and re-assess the quality of work executed by these contractors, before certifying them for payment.

Responding to the concerns raised by the members, the MCE accordingly tasked the engineers on the projects, and monitoring team of the Assembly, to intensify their responsibilities to ensure that the projects were executed according to specification.

Addressing the House, Asirifi delivered a well comprehensive report covering security, finance, decentralisation, development projects, education, health, agriculture, roads, sanitation and environment.

On the projects, the MCE intimated that despite issues raised over the quality of work on the part of the contractors, the government and the Assembly would continue to provide infrastructure and facilities to improve on the quality of life of the people.

This commitment, he claimed, hads been demonstrated through policy initiatives, projects and programmes, and the provision of infrastructure and facilities within the municipality.

Touching on security, the MCE said the Assembly was losing the battle in the fight against illegal mining.

According to him, illegal mining and its associated negative effects on the environment have threatened the security of the municipality, as large stretches of lands meant for farming have been destroyed.

It appears there is bringing under control this canker, despite frantic efforts and commitment by the Mining and Environmental, and Municipal Security committees to resolve it.

The Assembly realised GH¢617,534.86 as the total amount collected from the Internal Generated Fund (IGF) at the end of December, 2012, representing 131.33 percent of the total annual target of GH¢470,200.50.

Out of the amount collected from the IGF, GH¢680,044.70 was spent the same year, representing 102.10 percent of the annual expenditure figure of GH¢428,971. 00.

Mr. Asirifi assured members of the assembly of his readiness to intensify revenue collection in order to generate enough revenue for the development of the Municipality, since the other sources of revenue had become increasingly unreliable.

On roads, the East Akim MCE reiterated that roads play a very important role in the transportation of passengers and goods, hence, the government had undertaken the rehabilitation and construction of roads to facilitate the transaction of businesses and rendering of services to promote the growth of the economy.
