TO OPEN INDIGENOUS PEOPLES DAYS

Noted Native American activist and poet John Trudell brings his band, Bad Dog, to Grass Valley on Friday, October 5, 2012, to open the annual four day Indigenous Peoples Days celebration, organized by the local Tsi Akim Maidu tribe.

The four day event begins Friday 6 PM on Union Street, Nevada City, with a traditional round dance. At 7:30 PM, IPD moves to the Grass Valley Veterans Auditorium  for a concert with John Trudell and Bad Dog. Opening for Trudell will be the Tsi Akim Maidu Language Class, performing an original skit in the ancient Maidu language.

John Trudell, a Santee Sioux poet, recording artist, and activist, is internationally known for his part in the 1960's occupation of Alcatraz, his leadership in AIM, the American Indian Movement, and his transformation from tragedy to stature as a poet and recording artist.  After opening Indigenous Peoples Days last year, Trudell has become a friend and supporter of the Tsi Akim Maidu Tribe.

On Saturday, the celebration moves to Sycamore Ranch Park, on the Yuba River in Yuba County. Spirit runners will carry a fresh caught salmon to the campsite, where the public is invited to a traditional Maidu ceremony, "Calling Back the Salmon." Following the ceremony will be a salmon feast, native music and dance. New this year, local Mexican band members will perform traditional and contemporary Mexican music.

Sunday at Sycamore Ranch Park will be a day of talking circles, native music, and celebration. Traditional Hawaiian dancers are among the many performers offering native music between talking circles.

Talking circles, music and dance continue on Monday. Grand finale of the annual event is the Richard Prout Memorial Dinner.

Sycamore Ranch Park, owned and operated by Yuba County, provides camping for invited guests, entertainers, and volunteers. Sycamore is located on the Yuba River downstream about twenty miles and twenty minutes from Grass Valley on Highway #20..

Indigenous Peoples Days is an annual event produced by the Tsi Akim Tribe of the Taylorsville Rancheria, and community supporters. The event is free, except for the Trudell concert, and open to the public. IPD is drug and alcohol free. An all volunteer effort, IPD welcomes your donations.

Indigenous Peoples Days will be broadcast live on local community radio.

Volunteers are welcome. Call Heather or Corinna at the Tsi Akim tribal office, 530-274-7497.
