Who is Atilia?
Atilia or Raja Putri Atilia is Malaysia's latest addition of soul singers. One of Malaysian's untapped R&B/Jazz singer who was signed almost 10 years ago with RAP - Atilia is releasing her debut album - Sangkar soon. She classify her sound from R&B, soul, funk, jazz and Malay pop contemporary jazz.

Atilia's music history
Atilia has been in the music scene since 10 years ago. Many of us may not heard about Atilia until recently. Atilia started singing at the age of 4 and did her first jingles for KFC at the age of 9. Being the daughter of one of Malaysia's songbird in the 80s which is Salamiah Hassan, Atilia grew up in a world full of music. She had done jingles, voice-over and also play piano (but only until she's 10). Unlike her mom, Atilia starts to write songs when she was 12 - a gift from her grandma, who actually the writer of 'Patah Hati' an old Malay song.

She was first spotted by Roslan Aziz in 1996 and was later signed to the famous record label - RAP. She recorded her first ever single 'Pelangi Mimpi' in 1996 which is later included in the 'RAP Compilation 96' album along with fellow upcoming artist - Amir Yussof & Afdlin Shauki (to name a few). After 1996, the plan to release a full album were put on hold. Between then, Atilia also worked in Amir Yussof's "Aquarius" album, with Sasi the Don on Tide is High, with Poetic Ammo on Pass the Honey and also on Salamiah Hassan's album.

Talking about inspirations - with her mum being the first, Atilia listens to Sheila Majid, Azlina Aziz, Khatijah Ibrahim & Fairuz Hussein during all her years of passion in music. In fact, her favorite R&B album (local) would be Ratu by Sheila Majid. She also cites Sade, Earth Wind & Fire, Incognito, Brand New Heavies, Andien, Maliq & D'essentials, Tompi & Bali Lounge as her other favorites & inspirations.

About Sangkar - her debut album
With years of experience behind the scene, Atilia is no stranger when it comes to recording songs in the studio. It was in 2000 when Atilia together with Roslan Aziz started to collect materials for her debut album with more than 40 songs to choose from. The album, produced by Roslan Aziz and Jason Voo has progressively and carefully been directed and arranged to create timeless music that is soothing, smooth, rapturous and sensual – with beautifully written lyrics and carefully controlled musical arrangements. The album, mastered by Tom Coyne at Sterling Sound, NYC, USA contains 10 songs in which 6 were co-wrote by Atilia herself. Her favorite song from this album would be Duyong, where it was inspired when she had a holiday in Terengganu.

On Selalu Denganmu
One of the songs in her debut album is Selalu Denganmu, written by Tompi. Jazz fans in Malaysia may heard it first by Tompi from his debut album, T. How did she got it in her album? Well, when she was in Jakarta in 2005, she met Tompi there. A good friend of Atilia. Tompi let her listens to a few of demo of his songs  and like it was 'a love at first sound' Atilia fell in love with Selalu Denganmu & decided to record it in her own style.

On her dream
Atilia's biggest dream is to work Roslan Aziz and now that she have done it, her next dream is to make her debut album a collectible item for any music fans - and THIS is a myurban.net Collectible. She would also like to collaborate with either Tompi, Khatijah Ibrahim or her mum, Salamiah Hassan in the future.

Her 2007 plans
2007 will be a busy year for Atilia, releasing and promoting her debut album. She also wrote a song for the movie, Dukun called Merana Jiwa. She also sang and co-wrote Digi 016 sitcom's soundtrack "Ejen 016", "Takkan Duduk Menanti" and "Wajah yang kurindu".

Atilia's Sangkar will be released by EMI in early 2007. Thanks to Atilia & Fizar of Mujik Productions for this wonderful interview.
