A group calling itself National Democratic Congress (NDC) Youth of West Akim has called on President John Dramani Mahama to disregard calls by groups to maintain the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) in office, saying such a move would be disastrous for the party.

They argued that Martin Bruce Opare should be considered for the post of West Akim MCE since he is an astute member of the party and most suitable for the job.

In a press release dated Tuesday, May 28, 2013 and signed by one Ibrahim Sunday, a former Vice Chairman of the Lower West Akim Constituency, the group stated that "we, the concerned NDC youth of the West Akim Municipality, are appealing to His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama to appoint a competent party faithful to head the municipality as MCE."

"The President must not listen to selfish individuals within the ranks of both the constituency and regional executives to entrench the incompetent way the municipality is being run currently," it said.

It observed that "the singular competent individual at the moment is Martin Bruce Opare, the parliamentary candidate of the NDC in the 2012 general elections."

"Bruce Opare has the professional experience and solid party credential to lead the municipality not only in its developmental programmes but also in advancing the Better Ghana Agenda."

"He has served the party loyally since his University of Cape Coast days."

He contested the Lower West Akim parliamentary seat in 2004 and 2012, stressing that even though he did not win the seat he remained faithful to the party.

Bruce Opare is said to have contributed his quota to the development of education and health infrastructure, among others. His detractors are painting a picture that he is not popular in the area and lacks support from the locals, it revealed.

"On the contrary, Mr. Bruce Opare enjoys massive support within the ranks and file of the party both at the constituency and regional levels.

"Most importantly, the leadership of the traditional authority and opinion leaders are solidly behind him and are prepared to lend their fullest support to him when he is appointed. In our candid opinion, it will be a travesty of justice if this hardworking party loyalist is over looked."

"It will equally be disastrous for the party in the constituency if he is not given the nod," adding that "the patience of disillusioned party faithful is stretched to the limit."

When the West Akim MCE, George Mensah Akpalu was contacted, he refused to comment but said he was on top of affairs.
