THE EAST Akim Municipal Health Directorate has held a health forum at Akim Akooko in the metropolis to educate residents there about the causes of Tuberculosis, its mode of transmission and treatment.

The forum was attended by experts from the disease control division of the directorate as well as opinion leaders, students and residents of the town.

Addressing participants, Diana Ohene Adu, Disease Control Officer at the Municipal Health Directorate said TB is an air-borne disease which could be deadly if not treated on time.

She said constant coughing and chest pains while coughing could be traits of the disease and asked parents to immediately report to a health centre when they observe these symptoms for early treatment.

According to her, treatment is absolutely free at all health institutions therefore TB patients must not shy away from the hospitals.

She said treatment may take six to eight months depending on the degree of infection.

Another disease control officer, Hannah Orleans-Lindson told DAILY GUIDE that health personnel from the division had been going to schools, churches, prayer camps, markets and lorry parks to educate members of the public about the disease.

"We have intensified our education and what principally we tell them is that TB is curable and treatment is absolutely free in every health facility," she said

A senior physician assistant in charge of the Apedwa Sub-Municipal Health Office, Alfred Bismark Arthur coordinated the forum.
