Upper West <b>Akim</b> District inaugurated - ModernGhana.com Posted: 06 Jul 2012 05:30 AM PDT Adeiso(E/R), Jul. 6, GNA – Minister of the Interior, Mr. William Kwasi Aboah, on behalf of President John Evans Atta Mills inaugurated the Upper West Akim District at Adeiso, the new district capital. He said that the government was providing more than 9,000 motor bikes to all assembly members in the country. Mr Aboah said the assemblies would also receive 42 million Ghana Cedis seed capital, approved in the 2012 budget by Parliament. "Additionally, they had been factored into the 2012 Common Fund allocation formula and will also be factored into the District Development Fund (DDF) formula", he said. Mr Aboah said that, each new district would witness the building of a minimum of two Senior High Schools, a district hospital and provision of potable water and electricity for the district capital, and second class access road to the district capital. Mr. George Mensah Akpalu, West Akim Municipal Chief Executive, is the Acting District Chief Executive for the Upper West Akim District. He advised the chiefs and people and officials of the new district to co-operate and work diligently to ensure the development of the area. Mr Akpalu asked the people to guide them in their developmental efforts and urged them to always be part of the decision making process, "so as to assume ownership of every public venture that the assembly would undertake", he stressed. Mr. Eric Ansah Awuah, a District Magistrate, ushered assembly members for the 36 electoral areas into office, when they swore the oaths of office and secrecy. Mr. Kenni Tei is the first Presiding Member. Mr. Salas Mensah, former Member of Parliament (MP) for Upper West Constituency, now CEO of PPA, who noted that creating a new district was not a joke, but a serious business, said he was not a chief and therefore, could not offer lands for any project, donated a pick-up and two motor bikes to the district assembly. The assembly also took delivery of two brands of "YSS6 - Sinotruk", refuse trucks. Statesmen and other dignitaries from the area whose contribution helped in the creation of the district grace the occasion with their presence, they included Mr. Joseph Sam Amankwanor, Member of Parliament (MP) for Upper West Constituency, Major (rtd) Bampoe, former District Secretary for West Akim District Assembly. The chiefs, representatives of political parties, heads of departments, workers, traders, farmers and people of the newly created district went gay and welcomed the inauguration with pomp, it was indeed a colourful ceremony, whose story was waiting to be told. "Akim made tremendous strides in getting his career development path back on track this past season in Abbotsford and he was rewarded for his hard work by receiving an end-of-season recall to Calgary," said Flames General Manager Jay Feaster. "In his two games with our Club he showed that he is a very good skater, is willing to play a strong physical game and can also score goals at the NHL level. We really like the tools Akim possesses and the passion he brings to his game. We are confident that, given Akim's talent and ability, along with his solid work ethic, if he also continues to believe in his coaches and our organizational commitment to him, he will soon realize his dream of becoming a full-time player in the NHL." Aliu played in his first two NHL games this season, recording two goals and an assist. Born in Okene, Nigeria, Aliu recorded 10 goals and four assists for 14 points and 59 penalty minutes in 42 games with Abbotsford.
