Aimi Arsyida: Movie Review : Aku Kau & Dia ( Me You & Him )

Posted: 22 Jul 2012 11:05 AM PDT

Assalamualaikum everyone and it's time for movie review again. I watched this movie, directed by Pierre Andre last night and I thought I must give a review to this story. I nearlyyy forgot about it and just before I sleep just now, I suddenly remember my VOW so aha. Here I am :)

Okey this movie is basically about one girl who possessed almost everything in her life (great family background, great piano skills and a cute fiance) but stumbled when the love of her life passed away in the most tragic way you ever imagine. Trust me, by just seeing a car accident happened right in front of your eyes could already give you an eternity phobia, what with to have somebody you truly care to be in that grievous situation? Yep, it sends you nuts.

So, this girl named Mia, she could not let go of the past and still dwelling in her past sweet memories with her fiance, Ilhan. One day when she was out to (anywhere?)  , she got herself into a car accident which sent her into coma for 2 weeks. When she woke up, her semi-conscious mind built up a new character, Izlan and Izlan started to follow her everywhere and everytime. Half through the movie, Mia had fallen in love with this witty, happy-go-lucky busker Izlan and her spirit had slowly recovering. She started to wear more colourful dresses, never play the piano halfway anymore and she smiled! Oh my god, she smiled okay. Through out the movie I thought this girl could only give the same type of expression but it seems that she's normal too. I give the credits to the actress who played Mia because she really pulled off the character well. We can see the transition from sorrow, loneliness and pain that she bears vividly through her eyes to the happy, cheerful side of her.

Then of course some conflicts kicked in, car accidents happened again and Izlan was emitted to the hospital. From there she knew the ugly truth about the non-existence Izlan and started to recall. I love this scene the most because it is when we see why people were staring at them when they were talking, why her mother stuttered and missed out the 'info' from Izlan when they 'conversed' (she basically talked to herself), why Izlan was only there when Mia was alone. It was because everything was in her head. She imagined things. And her family just followed the rhythm because they didn't want her to go all depressed again.

Eventhough Izlan was not real however, the guy with THAT face was a real man. I know this might seems a bit confusing to some of you but the fact that Mia could imagine a guy with distinct features, fashion style and everything, she MUST had seen this guy somewhere that the image got stuck in her head. Yep, 'Izlan' was the last person Mia saw before she got into the car accident so I guess she somehow remembered that face and used it to imagine.

Done with synopsis, let's go to commenting part hehe.

1. Storyline

I think the story is very refreshing and outstanding. However, it lacks a bit in originality because the story looks like a longer version of one of the short story in SEPI. Even the lead girls have the same fashion sense. Long skirts, messy/uncombed hair, a sling bag. But I kinda agree that long skirts does give out a mysterious and untouchable image. It helps in suiting the mood. Nevertheless, I still think this movie has a good enough storyline to drag me into watching it.

2. Suspense Elements

Pierre Andre gotta work hard on his techniques because to be honest, I know from the start that Izlan is not real. I just need to confirm it by watching it till the end. This is because there are so many parts that give away all the secrets and too much clues. The moment I knew Izlan is just an imaginary boy was when both of them were having breakfast at the Papparich cafe. I thought there were too many turning heads when they were both talking. Maybe Pierre could make it more natural in sense of camera angle. The angle should be right when capturing these moments. Tricks should be applied. They should disguise the turning heads but at the same time make sure it was there to prove that Mia was talking to alone. You know what, I'll just give out an example. Try watching Singapore Ghost Story. It got the same 'imaginary thing' except that the boy is a ghost and I was totally fooled by the movie. Another one is too much car accidents. I know it is a significant event in this movie but atleast they should make Mia had gone coma over something else!

3.   Arts

In this case, I totally salute Pierre Andre for come out with such diligent piece. The art work is very neat, I love all the silhouette scenes, the camera angles. I think this is a beautiful movie and I never thought I could see it coming from other director other than Kabir Bhatia. Pierre has totally proven me wrong.

4. Unnecessary Lovey Dovey Scenes

I think the movie can still stand out from others without all those hugging and nearly kissing scenes. The story itself is already romantic, they shouldn't put in extra 'actions' in there. I mean, it is sooooo not proper to watch a Malay hugging a Malay. A Malay girl wanting to kiss a Malay boy. Please don't let me start on the religious part. I mean, please. This is Malaysia! This is a place where the majority of the citizens are Muslims! And it is really awkward to watch this movie with your family whereas it is definitely a good movie for family (minus the 18SX scenes). Come on, we had enough with social problems regarding teenagers and unprotected sex. So, showing off this type of scenes clearly doesn't helping at all. Do you know that most children redo back what they had been taught? Link it by yourself, I'm tired of explaining.

So, yeah. I rate this movie as 4.5 / 5 stars. I cut the points on the hugging/kissing scenes. I can tolerate with everything but not this sensitive issue. Please Malaysian film makers, I don't want my future children live in such corrupted society so please teach them the manners. Other than that, Aku Kau & Dia is in my favourite all time movie list.

Till then, Assalamualaikum.
