High Court orders arrest of Akim Oda Police Commander ...

Posted: 01 Feb 2012 05:42 AM PST

The Agona Swedru High Court has ordered the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to cause the arrest of Superintendent Akorli, Divisional Police Commander of Akim Oda for showing gross disrespect to the Court in a contempt matter against him.

The court presided over by Justice Anthony K. Yeboah asked the IGP to produce Supt Akorli in the High Court at Agona Swedru on February 10 this year.

It said, "The respondent was not to be granted bail except by this court at its earliest sitting".

Superintendent Akorli is facing a contempt charge before the Agona Swedru High Court for interfering with the administering of justice at the Swedru Circuit Court.

This was after the Divisional Police Commander had interfered in a case between Mr William Sam, Plaintiff and Mr Frank Akorli, a defendant, at Kasoa, a brother of the Divisional Commander at the premises of the court.

The Court further ordered that out of courtesy to the Eastern Regional Police Commander, the Command had been served a copy of the order.

It stressed however that the execution of this order was wholly the preserve of the IGP in Accra.

"Whereas this matter was before his Lordship Justice Anthony K. Yeboah (Judge) in the presence of Mr Ishmael Turkson, for Alex Graham, Esquire, Counsel for and on behalf of the applicant herein".

It would be recalled that the Akim Oda Divisional Police Commander, Supt. Akorli whose brother was involved in the case, ordered his personnel who accompanied him to the Swedru Circuit Court in September, 2011 to manhandle Mr Alex Graham counsel for Mr William Sam, one of the parties in the land case. Asante-Akim South gets Inter-party dialogue committee | VibeGhana ...

Posted: 31 Jan 2012 02:52 PM PST

A 21-member Inter-Party Dialogue Committee to promote peace through conflict mediation among the political parties in the Asante-Akim South District has been inaugurated at Juaso in the Ashanti Region.

It also seeks to provide the platform for the key stakeholders to engage with each other ahead of the coming December general poll.

The committee is made up of representatives of the political parties, religious and traditional leaders, the media, police, Electoral Commission and the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE).

Mr Lawrence Tweneboah-Kodua, District Director of the NCCE, said this was part of the efforts at helping to strengthen and consolidate Ghana's democratic credentials.

He said it was important for all to guard against complacency and rather work hard to build on the gains made in democratic governance.

He noted that as the campaigning for votes gathered steam, there could be slips by politicians and said it was the expectation that the committee would be proactive to prevent these from creating tension and confusion.

Mr Tweneboah-Koduah said useful lessons must be drawn from post election violence that had often characterised elections in many African countries and the attendant loss of lives.

"Certainly that is not the path we might want to travel as a nation", he added.

He said: "Ghana has an enviable reputation to protect as it goes to the polls," and urged the political parties and their supporters to ensure clean campaign and responsible conduct.

Mr De-graft Forkuo, District Chief Executive (DCE), welcomed the formation of the committee and encouraged political leaders to co-operate with it to make the elections violence-free in the district.

Its inauguration could not have come at a better time given the crucial and competitive nature of this year's election, he said.

The DCE advised the Committee to do all it could to deliver on its mandate. GNA

Flames acquire winger Akim Aliu from Winnipeg Jets

Posted: 30 Jan 2012 11:05 AM PST

The Calgary Flames, continuing to gradually reshape their organization, have acquired winger Akim Aliu from the Winnipeg Jets in exchange for defenceman John Negrin.

On loan from the Jets, Akiu had collected five points, including four goals, in 13 games with the Flames' farm team in Abbotsford.

Born in Nigeria, Akiu is six foot three and 205 pounds.

Both prospects were drafted in 2007 — Aliu 56th overall, out of OHL Sudbury, to the Chicago Blackhawks; Negrin 70th, out of WHL Kootenay, to the Flames.

Negrin, highly touted during the Darryl Sutter era, never got on track, primarily because of injuries. The 22-year-old had produced one point in 26 games for Abbotsford this winter.
