Faizal Hussein's response to Hiroshima Mon Amour Re-presenting ... Posted: 15 Oct 2012 04:22 PM PDT In "Hiroshima Mon Amour" by Marguerite Duras, two characters meet in Hiroshima and have a love affair. Aside from the adultery each character is comfortable enough to speak to each other about their most traumatic experiences. The male protagonist recollected his unwanted memories of Hiroshima because the female protagonist kept mentioning it. Then later on in the story the female protagonist was asked by the male protagonist to tell him about her first love. The story of her first love led into her recollection of her unpleasant memories. Both of their stories were told in the passage to fit certain aspects of Gordon's criteria. I believe that the female protagonist expresses her story through Gordon's views in the fact that the female character told a story of haunting in the cellar which was her own collective experience. She also fits Gordon's criteria because she felt like when she was in the cellar something had to be done however she state "Hands become useless in cellars. They scrape. They rub the skin off…against the walls.." (55) Another piece of evidence that shows she fits Gordon's views is that the female character blurs her past present and future together when she states repetitively "I dont remember any more" (59). The male protagonist fits Gordon's views on trauma in that he is haunted by the images that the female character brings up when he says "You saw nothing. Nothing."(18) The repetition of this phrase shows that he is haunted by the events that occurred because he wants her to stop describing what happened because it brought back painful memories for him. This shows that he was not really traumatized but only haunted because after the memories left his mind he would re-focus on his lust for the female character rather than ponder about his bad experience. Another aspect in which the male character fits Gordon's perspective is that he believed something should be done when he reveals "I was off fighting the war" (28). Discussant Question 1 : Do you think both characters fits Gordon's criteria? If so,which character do you think fits her criteria better? As both characters throughout the screenplay reveal their stories they are in love with each other. Both characters find a type of common ground through the intensity of their experiences which draws them closer together. This theme of love through pain is consistent throughout the screenplay. For example, it seems as if when the male character feels pain when he thinks he wont see her again he strives harder to find her. Also when the female character feels the pain of the thought that she wont see this man again just like her first love she is drawn closer to him and wants to spend more time with him. Discussant Question 2: The theme of love through pain is constant throughout the screenplay. However, do you believe that this relationship is truly love or just an intense infatuation? | |
