The Asante-Akim South District, last year, achieved 74 per cent coverage of supervised deliveries, a performance the health authorities say should get better.

Out of 3,067 pregnant women, 2,277 were delivered of their babies at the various health facilities.

The rest were done by traditional birth attendants (TBA).

Mr Daniel Adu Amankwah, the Disease Control Officer, who gave the statistics at an annual district health performance review meeting held at Juaso said they saw two maternal deaths, one of which was caused by an attempted abortion.

The meeting brought together health professionals, assembly members, chiefs, heads of decentralized department and members of community-based surveillance committees.

He said although the TBAs were doing a good job, preference should still go to the health facilities.

They needed to increase skilled deliveries if the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs- four and five) were to be achieved.

He said improving access to maternal, child and reproductive health services was among top priority activities they would undertake this year.

Mr Osei Mintah, Administrator of the Juaso District Hospital, said malaria came top of the 48,280 cases seen at the facility's out-patients department (OPD), during the review period.

A total of 11,952 patients were diagnosed with malaria and the disease claimed 11 lives.

He announced that the hospital had set up a mental health unit to provide treatment to psychiatric patients.
