Akim Aliu Arrives | Heat Hub Posted: 28 Dec 2011 10:41 PM PST Healthy bodies are at a premium in Abbotsford with injuries and call-ups striking the Heat at the same time, and help has arrived in the form of Akim Aliu (pronounce: AH-keem AH-loo) who has been re-assigned by the Winnipeg Jets. The 22-year-old was originally a second round pick of the Chicago Blackhawks in 2007, but is now Winnipeg Jets property after being included in the massive Dustin Byfuglian deal that saw seven players and two picks trade hands in the off-season that followed the Blackhawks Stanley Cup Championship. Aliu is a big body at 6'3″, 222 pounds and said today that getting his wind back what he's working on after suiting up with two different teams prior to arriving in Abbotsford, but having only played 13 games so far this season. Aliu started the season by being sent down to St. John's from Winnipeg's Camp, but didn't play for the IceCaps and was sent to Colorado of the ECHL about a month later. Things came to an end in Colorado after ten games and the Jets sent Aliu to Redbull (Salzburg) in Austria – one of the most prestigious club teams in Europe – where he played in an in-season tournament where he scored a goal in three games as Redbull played two Swedish teams and a Czech outfit. Aliu now finds himself in Abbotsford looking for a chance to prove he belongs in the AHL, where he has posted some quality numbers over his short AHL-career. The stats say he's tough and he can score, and he's now a member of the Heat as of today. Where Aliu fits in with the Heat remains to be seen, but Troy Ward always calls the AHL "the land of opportunity" and that's certainly the case for Aliu, if you don't believe me, ask Danny Taylor.
